Ebonye
Gussine Wilkins

I built a career in media activism as a social justice writer and editor shaping media through the lens of inclusion. What does that mean? I’ve helped corporations, nonprofit organizations, and individuals assess their materials and revise or create content that better reflects the communities they serve. Packaging solutions to be thoughtful, accurate, and empowering, I work with people to shift the focus toward what we can do right now to make content more inclusive. Using editorial practices and principles, I partner with people to help align their goals with the communities they seek to represent and create solutions with.

Now, as a Community Alignment Partner, I bring together good people and good companies to create media that heals and empowers. The solutions we build with each other offer a next step toward shaping the world we want to become.

Testimonials

Working with Ebonye to create educational materials for journalism students improved our class and made my job easier. She went above and beyond–interviewing reporters and editors to share their methods to create more inclusive work and building a resource guide on dozens of topics. The material was beautifully designed, engaging, and easy to navigate. And students said it made them re-think how they approach stories, particularly whose voices they include in their work. This is such an important lesson for young journalists. Plus, she’s just a joy to work with–clear communication, on time, and on budget—what more could you ask for?

Working with Ebonye blows your mind, in a good and oh so beneficial way. She reads, listens, then asks questions that helps her clients see, connect, value, and undertake productive action based on the buried treasure we have in our minds and spirits. She also subtly makes suggestions via her questions, but in a way that enables us to go on our own journey of discovery and find the thing we only eventually realize Ebonye was encouraging us to consider.

Ebonye is consummate professional who does far more than the average editor. She has an incredible ability to make make you think critically and apply it to your work. She took the time to explain her ideas and how they would make my work better and offered concrete examples to tie back to the overall thesis of my project. She quickly and enthusiastically delivered far more than expected and left no stone unturned. She is timely, ambitious, incisive, and direct, and she asks important questions. I recommend her to anyone who is willing to dig deeper into their own writing while receiving rigorous and necessary feedback. I would not have had the results from my project had it not been for Ebonye’s editorial talent.

Ebonye’s developmental edits on a highly sensitive, personal essay of mine were thorough, honest, and delivered gracefully with professionalism and kindness. I felt as if, after only one read of my piece, she had climbed into my head, moved some of the clunky furniture around, settled in, and deftly maneuvered my words to my intention. I have to explain very little to her; she just “gets it.” The end product was far deeper, richer, and somehow more truthful than the pre-Ebonye’d iteration and was very well received worldwide. All that, and she did it less than 24 hours. She is easily the most knowledgeable, resourceful, supportive editor I’ve ever had.

Ebonye is so smart. She’s like the ultimate “secret shopper” reading my emails and Facebook posts. She sees so much that I don’t, and she knows exactly how to explain things to me so they make sense. I’ve made so many mistakes in my journey toward inclusivity and Ebonye has been here the whole time, helping me understand better when I’ve done something wrong, even helping me craft a meaningful apology when I mess up. The more I work with and learn from Ebonye, the more confident I am in speaking up while knowing even though I still “mess it up,” I can still show up powerfully and have an impact.

I hired Inclusive Media Solutions LLC as a sensitivity editor for my essay collection based on the recommendation of a friend. Ebonye is not only a talented editor. She’s a wonderful guide. She asked tough questions about several passages in my book and made excellent suggestions for how to improve the clarity of my writing, the language, and the message of each essay. In addition to her manuscript editing, during our three phone calls together, we’ve talked through specific issues together. Ebonye offers thoughtful, specific responses, and if she doesn’t know the answers to my questions, she is always willing to find out and get back to me. Ebonye also follows up frequently to check on my progress. It’s one thing to hire an editor. But it’s another thing to hire an editor who truly champions and invests themselves in the work. It has been such a pleasure and honor to work with Inclusive Media Solutions and I hope to continue to work with Ebonye on future projects.
